Ahmedabad gets ready to host its first match of the season as Punjab and Kolkata face each other in Match 21.
After four losses in a row, the 2-time champions have hit the rock bottom on the points table. Their latest defeat
witnessed a very flavourless batting effort from Morgan’s men and it has become a big headache for Kolkata. The
bowling still has done a reasonable job but you need your batting unit to click if you want to win matches in this format. There is certainly no dearth of talent in
their squad but somehow it has not materialized into performance. Kolkata might look to shuffle their batting
order to see if it works.
Up against them are Punjab who were also going through a lean patch but then
tasted victory against the defending champions. It was a great bowling show by them to keep Mumbai’s batting quiet and then led by Rahul’s knock, they overhauled the target easily. For Punjab, it’s all about becoming consistent and getting a string of wins to resurrect their
campaign. The conditions in Ahmedabad is unknown but cently in the T20I series between India and England, it turned out to be a venue where chasing looked a good bet before the hosts showed England that defending is also possible. So it’s 50-50 and the captain winning the
toss will have to take a call depending on the pitch and the dew factor. Should be an entertaining clash!
When: Monday, April 26 at 7:30 PM IST.
Where: Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.
What to expect: India’s 3-2 T201 series win against England included a total as low as 124 and as high as 224, both posted by the hosts. There were three
successful chases while 180-plus totals were defended twice, which might be what the teams will be aiming at, with dew also likely to be a factor. Also, Ahmedabad has pitches of both red and black soil variety, with the latter offering variable bounce. The kind of pitch being rolled out might influence the make up of the sides.
Head-to-head : In 27 head-to-head meetings, Kolkata have managed to win 18 matches. On the other hand, Punjab have earned nine victories against
KKR. Both the sides won a game against each other in the IPL 2020.
